It seems to be a wink to Microsoft Hotshot Ballmer, who was just recently talking down on Google docs as not real competition to Microsoft Office Suite. As Znet’s Garett hints, is that what makes Google apps/docs so powerful is exactly what it shows here. It can work directly with th news. If Microsoft has anew idea it probably takes a year to reach a consumer and than it only effects those who buy an upgrade/new product, while Google docs delivers it within 2 days to every single user. Say what, Steve?

PS. I only got it to work with new documents, existing documents didnt let me add the footnote.

It is what happened to the internet browser (the successful inernet explorer challange of netscape) and the ebook reader (Microsoft Reader failed to beat Adobe (Acrobat) Reader), to name two.

Often these new apps come with their own file name extension, making them incompatible with other software. Now they actually have one format where they are the absolute standard . I think at the moment every pc in the world is able to process a .doc file. Even if you dont have MS word, most alternative software will process .doc files, online word processors are keen to have an import feature, google search indexes the files and even windows “native” wordpad can open a .doc file. So Microsoft got bored with people having to much ease of use and decided to through the .docx extension at the world in Office 2007. To maximize annoyance they made it the default format to save files in. Suddenly i found my inbox cloaked with unreadable files. Google Mail didnt have previews and nothing on my pc would read it. The only option was to find equally annoying free online converters, or – best one, but not always appropriate – send it back.

Luckily Zoho- the online office suite – had a response . They launched import functionalatity for Docx for their Writer app. So no more annoying converters. And while you’re at zoho, have a look around. There is a lot to see!

My Taskbar and especially Quick Launch Toolbar have undergone a metamorphosis the install of Google Chrome Browser. See the image at the left. As you can see I prefer the standing vertical taskbar. This allows me to have a lote more tabs open.

Web apps were always a bit difficult to get to, but this instant access without even an address bar in the browser window, really has opened up a lot potential for me.

The Old Guard

But let me take you through all that is at display. For instant messaging and file transfers, i still depend on desktop software (not sure if file transfers would ever make it into a web app…) hence the pidgin, skype, google talk, filezilla, flashget and idrive icons. Than there is two native window icons for the desktop and the recycle bin, as well as a bleutooth icon to get images from my phone. Itunes is for syncing my ipod more than anything else. Than my most adored desktop app: notepad++: always fast loading, instant savable, and again with ftp support. But the rest is pretty much web apps.

The New Frontier

Gmail is the core of it all, Google docs help me edit documents and articles. There is still need for an actual need for browser windows now and than. The one displayed actually opened by google docs, as the web apps can’t keep a pop-up in a web app window yet (and how would they differentiate between an app “native” link or an external?) Todist helps me see what tasks i am not doing et the moment and statcounter keeps me informed of my real time website performances. I am still figuring out what to do for an online image editor, hence the multiple icons in that field. There is a couple of the mandatory social networking sites, obviously Google Notebook to keep track of offline stuff (one of the few apps for which i miss my firefox plug-in) . As the last quick launch icon you can see Prism in which i load a additional google account.

I have to say i love my new task bar and happy that i become less depended on the operating system. The only thing that keeps me in windows is ironically apple’s itunes with last.fm plug-in to build an online library, but i might disattached from that as well….

Word from around the blogs and newspapers below, but here is the official site .

Google System:

After less than a year since the initial Android announcement, T-Mobile USA launches today the first handset that uses Android’s software stack: a smartphone built by HTC, which is known for manufacturing Windows Mobile portable devices.

T-Mobile G1 showcases some of the most advanced capabilities of Android, by including a touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, accelerated 3D graphics, Wi-Fi and 3G support, GPS and accelerometer. The device won’t have an impressive design and it won’t be as easy to use as an iPhone, but it will certainly be able to run a lot of interesting applications.

The Most Exciting Apps are listed at Gizmodo.Com:

Amid the iPhone 3G launch hysteria, we made a pronouncement that, looking back now long after the dust has settled, pretty well nailed it: forget hardware, it’s code that counts. Code via the juggernaut that is the App Store, which allowed the iPhone to truly came into its own as a mobile platform.

Now, our first official look at T-Mobile’s G1, the first Android-capable phone built by HTC, is less than 24 hours away, and the same adage holds true now more than ever. Android’s openness puts the emphasis even more squarely on the code this platform will run, making the hardware almost an afterthought. And while it’s still quite early in the game and things won’t really kick up until the G1 becomes available sometime in October, the Android Market is already looking like an equally if not more vibrant place for great apps for your phone.

One of the main positive points in our Android preview guide was that Android will likely be home to the best direct tie-ins to Google’s web apps like Maps, Docs, and Gmail, of any device around. And not only will they shine individually (remember’s Apple’s proud claims of the iPhone’s custom Google Maps integration?), each Google service is set up as an open API within Android, meaning they’re all available for mashing up with any other type of data imaginable in third party applications, effectively allowing developers to easily convert awesome Google service hybrids (like Beer Mapping, one of my favorites) into mobile apps.

Unsurprisingly, Maps integrations are the main focus being taken by the early wave of Android Apps, many of which were written in response to the Android Developer’s challenge. Throw in location awareness via GPS or cell towers (another Android core service), and we’ve got ourselves the ingredients for some truly next-level stuff.

More surprisingly the phone runs Amazon Mp3 store:

Amazon.com said this morning that its MP3 music store will be pre-loaded on the T-Mobile G1, the first phone to be powered by Android.

T-Mobile G1 owners will be able to buy and play music from Amazon MP3, whose songs are DRM free and thus able to be loaded onto multiple devices. Small catch: Downloading music to the phone requires a Wi-Fi connection.

Reuters reporter Paul Thomasch said in his blog, “Thanks Amazon! The online retailer put out a release this morning with some juicy details about Google’s new mobile phone — even as we’re still waiting for the official unveiling later today.”

Later Reuers posted some more info and ask: “So, are you itching to pick one up? Would you trade in your iPhone or other mobile handset for a G1?” That is question that is presumambly on a lot of minds. Including Steve Jobs’….

So what is Zoho? Webguild says:

Zoho is a remarkable company. They have out maneuvered all the usual suspects such as Microsoft, Google, and Salesforce at their own games. Not too long ago, the company turned down a takeover offer from Salesforce. Zoho is an example of the new Web economics at work. The company hails from India, has never taken venture funding and has a ten person operation in Silicon Valley. Yet, if you look at its suite of products you would think it has a Fortune 500 company backing it. The company employees 600 engineers, developers, product managers, and technicians in India that develop and build its products.
